About the Director
Sam Max (b. 1995, Pennsylvania) is a playwright and filmmaker. Beginning their career in theatre, their work is known for centering queer characters in “poetic spaces where death and dreams converge, making otherworldly encounters possible” (Suhrkamp Theater Verlag). As a young artist working in performance, their writing and direction became internationally recognized and performed at prestigious festivals in cities such as New York, San Francisco, Berlin, Vienna, and Beijing. They are a recipient of the Lotos Foundation Prize in the Arts and Sciences, the Chesley/Bumbalo Playwriting Award, and a proud member of New Dramatists in New York and Suhrkamp Theater Verlag in Berlin. In 2018 they were named to the Young & Hungry List tracking “Hollywood’s Top 100 New Writers.” Chaperone is their first film. samspacemax.info
